Петр, спасаясь от преследований императора Нерона, оставил Рим; на Аппиевой дороге ( on the Appian Way) ему было видение: явился сам Христос; Петр спросил: "Господи, куда идёшь?" и услышал ответ: "Иду в Рим, чтобы снова быть распятым" ("I am coming to Rome to be crucified again", лат. "Venio Romam, iterum crucifigi"); эти слова толкуются как предсказание судьбы: ап. Петр должен вернуться в Рим, чтобы исполнить свой долг до конца и быть распятым, как был распят Иисус; художники изображают обычно Христа несущим свой крест и обращающимся к застывшему от удивления апостолу; в указанном легендой месте, на "старой Аппиевой дороге" в 5 в. заложена церковь; польский писатель Г. Сенкевич написал в 1894-96 истор. роман "Камо грядеши" (лат.
